Age groups are determined by Hockey Victoria according to the players age at January 1st and has teams from under 8’s through to under 18’s. Teams play either Saturday morning (Under 8, 10 and 12) or Friday evening (Under 14, 16 and 18) and are categorised:

Key Policies
Camberwell Hockey Club have a number of policies that guide the successful running of the junior competition and help support a positive playing environment within the club. At a minimum you should familiarise yourself with the following key policies.
Player Age Group and Team Selection
All players of Junior age shall play primarily in a regular Junior team.
Players are expected to play in the correct age group that corresponds to their year of birth. For example, in any year the U14 age group would comprise players that would celebrate their 13th or 14th birthday during that year.
Exemptions to this policy may be allowed in exceptional circumstances. Written requests with reasons should be directed to the Junior Secretary, juniors@camberwellhockeyclub.com.au prior to pre-season training commencing and will be considered by a Junior Section sub-committee.
Where a player normally plays in a particular age group, he or she shall not play in a higher age group unless that team is short of players for the match in question.
Shield and Pennant team selections are undertaken in collaboration between senior administrators, age-group co-ordinators and coaches. All selection activities will take place during pre-season training and practice matches.
All players of Junior age shall play primarily in a regular Junior team prior to contemplating any Senior section involvement.
The Club does not support players eligible to play in the u12 or u14 age groups playing in a Senior competition. In order to ensure player protection any Junior eligible to play in an u12 or u14 team who wish to additionally to train or play with a Camberwell senior team must submit a written request outlining reasons for consideration to play in both sections before the commencement of Junior pre-season training. Please forward to the Junior Chair. A player eligible to play in an u16 Junior competition is permitted to train and play with a Senior competition team with Camberwell.
If a Junior player trains or plays with a Senior Camberwell team then training and playing with his/her Junior team is to take priority each week throughout the Junior pre-season, season and any Finals. The coaches of the Junior team and Senior teams are expected to be in regular contact with each other, the player and the player’s parents to plan and manage the player’s sporting workload taking in to account his/her school sporting commitments and other sporting activities. If a player is injured, unwell, managing training or playing load or minimising the risk of injury or keeping up with academic load then the player will not play for or train with a Senior competition team/squad if the player has not actively participated in the preceding match or preceding training session of his/her Junior team. If this requirement is breached then the Junior Chair will seek an explanation from the player, parents, senior coach and chair of the senior section. Please note that any juniors who play regularly in any senior grades shall be required to also pay a senior subscription at a discounted rate. These fees are levied separately to Junior registration.
Players wishing to play in a Senior competition for a club other than Camberwell Hockey Club must submit a written request, stating reasons, to the Junior Chair before attending training at the other club. In exceptional circumstances the Junior Committee, or a sub-committee appointed by the Chair, may agree. This would generally be limited to a Junior Player who resides in regional Victoria playing in a Senior competition in that region.
Member Protection, Conduct & Photography
The Member Protection Policy has been developed to ensure everyone at Camberwell Hockey Club (CHC) is treated with respect and dignity and is safe and protected from abuse.
As a player, coach, parent or spectator involved with the Club, it is important for you to familiarise yourself with the Club’s Member Protection Policy and abide by it at all times. During the registration process you will be asked to review and agree to the Member Protection Policy.
The Club occasionally captures non-identified images of players for use on the Club’s web-site, social media and member marketing materials such as newsletters. Such photos add a rich and engaging depth to our media outlets and greatly assist in our engagement with players, members and sponsors.
If you do not wish your child’s image to be used in this way please write to the Junior Secretary and include a “head and shoulders” photo of your child as soon as possible after registration: juniors@camberwellhockeyclub.com.au
Umpires
Hockey Victoria requires each junior club to develop junior umpires as part of the Umpire Development Program. The Club strongly supports this program and encourages all junior players to better understand the Rules of Hockey.
All junior umpires are given training during the season and are supported to attain official Hockey Victoria accreditation. The umpires are paid for each game. If your child is interested in becoming an umpire please email Melissa Norquay juniors.umpiringCHC@gmail.com
We are required to provide one umpire (unless provided by Hockey Victoria) for every game and endeavour to use Camberwell Hockey Club Junior umpires for junior matches. There may be games however, when a parent is needed to umpire a game or act as ‘mentor’ for an inexperienced junior. Please let your team manager know if you would be willing to help out with either of these tasks.
Volunteer Positions
Camberwell Hockey Club is a large and successful community-based club with over 300 Junior players participating in our programs. The continued success of our Club relies on the support of parents and family. There are a number of ways that you may become involved:
Group Coordinators
We have 3 Group Coordinator Roles - Girls (U12-U16), Boys (U12-U16) and U10 Coordinator. This role involves liaison with the selectors in the pre-season; and team managers and coaches post selection. Whilst a pivotal role, hockey knowledge is not required.
Ball Kid Coordinators
A Ball Kid Coordinator is required to organise ball kids required for our Premier League Home Games.
Team Managers
A manager is required for every team and is responsible for assisting the coach with the organisation of the team, liaising with parents and entering match scores.
Coaches
We are fortunate to have a number of experienced hockey playing parents at the Club and would encourage you to consider taking on a coaching support role. Our well established coaching program engages our senior players as juniors coaches but can always use extra support. If you are interested the Junior Coaching Coordinator will be in contact.
Other Ways to Volunteer
The Junior committee has primary responsibility for overseeing the junior programs. Particular tasks are delegated to non-committee members, giving every parent the opportunity to contribute in his or her own way according to time available, interests, skills and experience. Opportunities include assistance with communications and newsletter publication, managing registrations and team lists, managing team and goalie equipment, photography, presentation skills, event organisation, fundraising etc.
You will be asked during registration if you are likely to be able to assist in a volunteer role. You don’t need to be a hockey player yourself or to know about hockey either – we all learn as we go along. Please consider getting involved.
If you are transferring to Camberwell from another club, please contact Bronwen Kohne, before registering. CHC must request a transfer on behalf of the player
If you would like further advice on which program is suitable for your son/daughter please contact Bronwen Kohne, juniors.registrar@camberwellhockeyclub.com.au before registering.
