Celebrating Women & Girls Round
Article by Keeley Pledge
Over the past week we have been celebrating Women and Girls’ round – kicking off the week with teams wearing pink to training, supporting Hockey Victoria’s Women & Girls Breakfast, and leading into a big weekend down at Matlock.
Hockey Victoria’s Women & Girls Breakfast
On Friday morning we invited CHC members who contribute to the club both on and off the field to the annual HV Women & Girls Breakfast once again supporting Breast Cancer Network. This year was a little different with attendees asked to participate in a painting session to the theme Who are you in Sport?’…a player, an administrator, coach, official, spectator or supporter to name a few. I’m not sure any of us will be giving up our day jobs and listing artist as our profession but we had fun.
Play Like. A Girl Scholarship
At the breakfast CHC’s own Meg Mortensen was announced as Hockey Victoria’s recipient of the Play Like A Girl Scholarship.
The five-week program has been developed to guide the personal and professional journey of girls through a sports lens and gives participants a five-step blueprint to building a toolbox of mindset and self-belief strategies that can be used in any arena where a girl wants to make her mark.
Congratulations Meg.
Saturday we had a massive day with the PL / PLR teams playing Doncaster, who joined forces to host a very successful bake sale and raffle raising over $1000 for our chosen charity, Impact. Following the action from the day before, on Sunday the Women's Pennant and Metro section had their day at Matlock with 4 home games.
Kathy Kaplan OAM
To cap off the week we had the incredible Kathy Kaplan OAM, the founder of Impact come and speak with us on Tuesday Night. She discussed the work that Impact does in showing support to victims escaping domestic violence, as well as providing tools individuals and the community can implement to show their support. A very engaging talk with a very important message for everyone to hear and learn about – This can still be accessed via the clubs Instagram if you would like to listen to her speak. Thankyou to everyone who volunteered, wore pink socks, ribbons, tape and supported the round via donations or even just coming down to the club – it is all appreciated!
A special thank you to Doncaster for taking part in the bake sale, we wouldn’t have been able to raise as much money as we did without their help.
